FreyZein® is built for brands and manufacturers who want to add weather protection — wind resistance, water repellency, and breathability — to lightweight natural fabrics without changing how they look or feel. It's designed for applications where a natural aesthetic and handfeel matter as much as performance: lightweight outerwear, overshirts, trenchcoats, and other apparel where a stiff or plastic-feeling technical membrane would compromise the design.

Brands can start with FreyZein®'s qualified material library — a pre-vetted range of natural fabrics already optimized for FreyZein® technology — for the fastest path to a finished product. Brands that want to use their own fabric can instead work directly with FreyZein®'s team to develop a bespoke construction tailored to that material. FreyZein® offers two platforms: FreyZein® S9, a windproof, water-resistant, and extremely breathable 2- or 3-layer construction for lightweight outerwear, overshirts, and trenchcoats; and FreyZein® SX, a next-generation waterproof membrane platform currently in development for brands seeking a bio-based alternative to synthetic waterproof laminates.

The core fiber and membrane structure of our S° Series is built entirely from cellulose. The only non-cellulosic component in the current construction is the thin bonding layer between layers.
Compared to conventional waterproof-breathable laminates — where the entire membrane, backing, and adhesive are typically petrochemical-based — FreyZein® replaces nearly all of that with cellulose, leaving only a small, actively shrinking share of synthetic material in the adhesive. Closing that final gap toward a fully biobased laminate is a current priority for our R&D team. -
Yes. All FreyZein® platforms, including S9 and SX, are PFAS-free by design.

Yes. FreyZein® works with European research institutes, universities, and industry partners on active projects spanning bio-based textile functionalization, thermal insulation, and next-generation membrane technology — including collaborations funded through Horizon Europe, FFG, and the European Space Agency.
